Stay at Home - Aging in Place

Aging in Place is the ability to live in one's own home - wherever that might be - for as long as confidently and comfortably possible.  Livability in the home can be extended through the incorporation of in-home health care, advanced home design principles, and other technologies and safety features that make it more possible than ever to stay in your own home.

Thanks to medical advances, better nutrition and healthier living, everyone is living longer…many older Americans are living in their homes well into their 70’s 80’s and beyond.
The population of Americans age 65 and older will double from 35 million to 70 million over the next twenty-five years. The challenge we face as a nation in housing and caring for this many seniors is unprecedented.  Better alternatives for housing, healthcare, homecare and long-term care are needed.
A 2004 study by the National Council on Aging found that homeowners over 65 have well over $2 trillion in home equity that could become available for meeting their personal needs, including home care and long-term care expenses, as they age.  The most common vehicle for accessing this home equity is through government insured Reverse Mortgages.   Studies by AARP and others consistently indicate that the majority of seniors want to remain in their own homes as long as possible.  Taken together, this research points to the need for a wide variety of services to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding group of older homeowners choosing to live in the comfort of their homes.
The Journal of Housing for the Elderly states that aging in place is "not having to move from one's present residence in order to secure necessary support services in response to changing needs".  Aging in Place has grown in popularity and celebrated by the National Aging in Place Week and the National Aging in Place Council that promotes the positive outcomes of seniors having a choice in their care and living arrangements.
